About this cocktail

The OG. The blueprint.

Invented in the 1800s, the Sazerac is widely considered America’s first cocktail — and it’s still the official drink of New Orleans. It’s bold, boozy, and beautifully balanced, with a hint of absinthe and the signature spice of Peychaud’s bitters.

Method

  • Chill the Glass: Place a rocks glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
  • Prepare the Sugar: In a separate mixing glass, add the sugar cube and Peychaud’s bitters. Muddle gently until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
  • Add the Spirit: Pour in the rye whisky (or Cognac) and add ice. Stir for about 20–30 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Rinse with Absinthe: Discard the ice from your chilled glass (if using). Add the absinthe, swirl to coat the inside of the glass, then discard any excess.
  • Strain and Garnish: Strain the chilled mixture into the prepared glass (traditionally served without ice). Express the lemon peel over the drink to release its oils, then drop it in or discard for a more traditional presentation.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz. rye whiskey or bourbon
  • 1 rinse Absinthe
  • ½oz Sugar Syrup
  • 2 ds Peychaud's Bitters
  • Lemon peel twist to garnish
